In his childhood, Derek Chan and his father would go around Hong Kong, visiting landmarks such as Victoria Park. Now working in Vancouver as a playwright and co-artistic director of rice & beans theatre, he has seen through the media how some of those beloved parks become the locations of protests for freedom. Inspired by the strength of the Hong Kong people, Derek created the work yellow objects to add his voice to the conversation. Bearing the sentiments of what was, what has been, what is, and what could be, yellow objects is a piece of Derek’s connection to Hong Kong, and a yearning for Vancouver to do more.
