Thank you for your interest in our volunteering opportunities. 

Since its formation in 2017, The Society of We Are Canadians Too has co-organized cultural arts events that share and celebrate the diversity of perspectives in Vancouver. All events led by SWACT are approached with the purposes to advance the public’s appreciation of visual and performing arts, create events that present the works of artists, and provide a forum for artists to reach the community. Such events include: Celebrate the Accents, LunarFest, and The Lantern City.

We are seeking highly passionate and like-minded individuals to join us. If you are interested in helping or you are looking to build your resume, here are different positions allow you to utilize the education and training in a real-world application.

Available Positions

We are seeking individuals fluent in English/Chinese to translate textual festival content for TAIWANfest’s website and social media. 

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate with Social Media Manager to translate social media posts from English to Chinese
  • Learn and become familiar with event themes and programs through study and a provided orientation
  • Translate/interpret festival program descriptions from English to Chinese for the event website
  • Share/post translated content to relevant groups in the Chinese speaking communities
  • Proofread and check for grammar, spelling and punctuation accuracy
  • Flexibility of working from home

Required Qualifications:

  • Fluency in written Chinese a must
  • Time flexibility to meet changing or urgent deadlines
  • Willingness to ask questions to best understand and interpret assigned content
  • Detail oriented: pays attention to nuances present in different languages
  • Experience with Google Suite Applications a plus (Drive, Doc, Sheets, etc)
  • Previous written translation experience a plus, please provide previous examples if available

We are looking for a Web Designer to assist in creating the visual structure of websites for TAIWANfest. The role will involve working closely with the Artistic Director and Website Staff to design thematic and effective website layouts.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Design and create website layouts that are aesthetically pleasing and effective in delivering information
  • Work alongside the Artistic Director and Website Administrator on website related tasks
  • Check website content for accuracy
  • Flexibility of working from home

Required Qualifications:

  • Have a high-level proficiency in Adobe Suite – XD, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc
  • Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and Javascript
  • Well versed in modern UI/UX principles and put these principles into websites
  • Ability to work very closely with designers and respect pixel perfect design
  • Aesthetically inclined and an appreciation for good design
  • Willingness to learn
  • Strong time management ability to meet changing priorities while meeting strict deadlines
  • Experience working in a highly collaborative environment
  • Strongly detail-oriented and organized

We are looking for individuals with experience in graphic design to assist in creating event assets and advertisements for TAIWANfest.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Create and edit high-quality event graphics for various platforms including event website and social media channels
  • Communicate efficiently with Artistic Director and Senior Designers to adjust designs upon feedback
  • Assist the Artistic Director and the Senior Designer in related tasks
  • Flexibility of working from home

Required Qualifications:

  • Ability to meet deadlines and work well under pressure
  • Experience with Adobe Suite – Photoshop, Illustrator, XD, InDesign, etc
  • Willingness to learn
  • Proficiency in written and/or spoken Mandarin a plus

We are seeking individuals who have experience in video editing to assist in the organization, editing, and processing of video content for TAIWANfest promotion and programming.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Create and edit high-quality videos for video promotions and programming
  • Communicate efficiently with Artistic Director and Senior Designers to adjust videos upon feedback
  • Assist the Artistic Director and the Senior Designer in related tasks
  • Flexibility of working from home

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience with Adobe Suite – Premiere, After Effects, etc
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work well under pressure
  • Ability to create high quality video animations and transitions
  • Ability to draw and create graphic animations are a plus.

We are looking for individuals interested in website management to assist the team of website editors working to build and maintain TAIWANfest websites.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Create responsive and custom WordPress websites using Elementor page builder as a foundation, and able to tailor the rest of the site to match mockups
  • Upload festival program content to our website using WordPress platform
  • Development, debugging and maintenance of existing and new WordPress web projects
  • Check website content for accuracy, links, bugs, etc
  • Proofread and edit text before publishing
  • Frequent communication with website staff to adhere to scheduled updates
  • Flexibility of working from home

Required Qualifications:

  • Previous WordPress experience a plus but not required
  • Willingness to learn and ask questions
  • Attention to accuracy and detail
  • Familiarity with Google Suite a plus (Docs, Sheets, etc)

 

We are looking for a Social Media Coordinator who is passionate about social media to assist us in planning, writing, scheduling, and sharing promotional posts across multiple social media platforms. We welcome those who enjoy using editing apps to create social media images, or someone just looking to gain experience in event promotion.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Write, edit, and publish posts in various formats to multiple social media platforms
  • Communicate with Social Media Coordinator to deliver tasks according to publish schedule
  • Research relevant community groups for delivery of content to target audience
  • Communicate with design team for required visual assets
  • Flexibility of working from home

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in navigating business accounts for Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Twitter a plus
  • Willingness to learn
  • Ability to meet changing priorities while meeting strict deadlines
  • High proficiency in written English is required; additional languages such as written Chinese or French is a plus
  • Familiarity with Google Suite Applications a plus (Drive, Docs, Sheets, etc)

We are looking for an Event Production Assistant who will work closely with the Managing Director and Production Manager to plan and manage event logistics and programming. This role includes participation in program development with a focus on logistical concerns, coordination of program elements with festival partners and performing artists, as well as on-site event management and coordination leading up to, during, and immediately after the event.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Assist Directors and Production Manager in overall event planning and coordination
  • Work effectively in the coordination of programming, festival partners, performing artists, vendors and volunteers
  • Perform daily tasks for Production Manager as needed, including email communications and logistical planning
  • Assist with delivery of event content and programming, archival coverage, volunteer management and other event specific tasks during event days

Required Qualifications:

  • Ability to recognize the time frame and order of operations involved in planning and managing the event
  • Adapt swiftly to real time factors such as changes to programming, on-site event management, and third party involvement (ie sponsors and partners)
  • Strong time management ability to meet changing priorities while meeting strict deadlines
  • Experience working in a highly collaborative environment
  • Strongly detail-oriented and organized
  • Experience with Google Suite Applications (Drive, Docs, Sheets, etc)
  • Having hands-on experience using AutoCad and Adobe Illustrator would be an asset but not required

  • Communicate ideas and updates with the creative team and deliver the event’s core theme through the content created
  • Reach out, connect, and work with artists in the community to explore and create program content fitting TAIWANfest
  • Manage program development with partnered artists and organizations, such as email communications and participating in meetings
  • Collect and organize artist information for event website and social media
  • Assist with delivery of event content and programming, archival coverage, volunteer management and other event specific tasks during event days

We are looking for a Community Development Coordinator who will be tasked to assist with the development of program contents and communications related to event programming. This role will contribute to the curation and presentation of event program content, developing strong communicative relationships with event partners, artists, sponsors, and media contacts.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the development of event resources and creating relationships with festival partners and sponsors
  • Arrange and participate in meetings with community partners
  • Assist with development of relationships with media partners
  • Assist with media-related tasks including writing press releases, organizing and delivering ad and website copy
  • Aid in the organization of press conferences
  • Assist with delivery of event content and programming, archival coverage, volunteer management, and other event specific tasks during event days

Job Description:

We are looking for bright and motivated candidates to join our volunteer coordinating team. This role involves working closely with staff and other volunteers prior to and during the festival. This is a great opportunity for interested students to bolster their HR management experience, learn about unique & innovative arts and cultural programming, and develop skills that would be an asset as they work toward graduate school.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Work from home with the organizing staff in the weeks leading up to the event to create a timeline for tasks and deadlines
  • Recruit volunteers from all over the Greater Vancouver and Toronto Areas by using different platforms including social media and job boards
  • Work with TAIWANfest Program Ambassadors to develop and implement volunteer training programs
  • Evaluate volunteer applications and assign volunteer positions
  • Maintain regular communication with volunteers
  • Ensure volunteers fully understand how to do their jobs
  • Attend and participate in organizing staff conference calls
  • Foster a strong team relationship which emphasizes teamwork and communication
  • Oversee events on the days of the Festival
  • Prepare Volunteer Certificates after the event

Required Qualifications

  • Must be able to commit 35 hours per week for 2 months leading up to Labour Day Weekend

Job Description:

We are looking for individuals interested in hosting the activities during the festival. This role includes communicating with staff, performers, and other volunteers, as well as interacting with live audiences at the festival.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Communicating with staff to learn about the festival programs that the emcee is presenting
  • Imbue festival audience with energy and passion 
  • Articulating and presenting the events with respect and enthusiasm
  • Being present during the festival and events at scheduled times
  • Willing to handle equipment with care, assist stage managers and technicians when necessary
  • Check the schedule with performers and stage manager beforehand

Required Qualifications:

  • Comfortable with public speaking
  • Must attend orientation sessions prior to the event
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to communicate in Mandarin is an asset
  • Ability to meet changing priorities while meeting strict deadlines
