Yellow Objects

DEREK CHAN – PLAYWRING / DIRECTOR / PERFORMER / TRANSLATOR / PRODUCER

In his childhood, Derek Chan and his father would go around Hong Kong, visiting landmarks such as Victoria Park. Now working in Vancouver as a playwright and co-artistic director of rice & beans theatre, he has seen through the media how some of those beloved parks become the locations of protests for freedom. Inspired by the strength of the Hong Kong people, Derek created the work yellow objects to add his voice to the conversation. Bearing the sentiments of what was, what has been, what is, and what could be, yellow objects is a piece of Derek’s connection to Hong Kong, and a yearning for Vancouver to do more.

DARREN RAMDOUR – POLICE OFFICER

Mauritius is a small yet incredibly diverse island, lending back to its history of visitors and inhabitants from nearby continents. Darren Ramdour takes us on a journey back in time to tell us about this intriguing island, once home to the infamous dodo bird, and the birthplace of dance and music that was born from the positivity people needed to get through their everyday lives in enslavement.

Coming from a background that crosses four continents, it’s no surprise that Darren has such a strong connection to cultural communities in Vancouver. But he wasn’t always so active when he first arrived in Canada. Riding around downtown as a traffic officer on a hot summer day in 2018, what did he see along Granville Street that inspired him to engage in bringing the community together?

Untold Stories of Taiwan

V-Tse-Yi Wang

Untold Storeis of Taiwan

TSE-YI WANG – SCIENTIST / HISTORIAN / PROFESSOR

The Jitong that are often seen outside the temples actually did not originate from long-established Taoist beliefs. The traditional Chinese vocabulary that we use in today’s society was not carried over from China. The idea of nationalism that is often attributed to Western ideals, in reality, might be an entirely new concept altogether.

In the past, Dr. Tse-Yi Wang examined multiple perspectives, such as the DNA in our blood, the route of human migration, and the contextual history of social development to change the world and even the Taiwanese’s own understanding of Taiwan. Today, he will share with us things never heard of before and some stone-cold facts, to shatter our previous misconceptions and lead us in exploring Taiwan’s truths once more!

Mountains, Seas, And Plains

V-Li-Po Chen

Mountains, Seas, And Plains

LI-PO CHEN – CHAIRMAN OF CHEN CHENG-PO CULTURAL FOUNDATION

To the people who have never heard of “Taiwan,” how do the Taiwanese explain where their home is? Is it “just beside China,” or “under Japan,” or “close to the Philippines”?

Li-Po Chen, CEO of the Chen Chengpo Cultural Foundation, believes an answer can be found in the mountains, the sea, and the plains that make up Taiwan’s breathtaking natural environments. What does the geology of the island tell us about Taiwan? How can we use geography to explain this place called Taiwan?

His grandfather, Chen Chengpo, was a Taiwanese painter who had received a Japanese education and created many oil paintings of the various landscapes found throughout Taiwan, from the mountain ranges of Alishan to the everyday streets of his hometown, Chiayi. Although he died in the February 28 Incident, his legacy of promoting Taiwan’s scenery lives on.

Listen to Li-Po Chen tell his grandfather’s story, and get to know Taiwan through the island’s natural beauty!

How do Asians Protest?

V-Jina Kim

How Do Asians Protest?

JINA KIM – PROFESSOR / AUTHOR

Professor Jina Kim’s Hope Talk revolves around two novellas that were written by respected female authors from Taiwan and South Korea. These two novellas that are introduced in her Hope Talk highlight the effects of post colonialism that link Taiwan and South Korea’s history together. Through the lens of Professor Kim, listeners can glance into her perspectives and take on how she interprets the messages and struggles from historical based fiction that were written by two female authors in a patriarchal time.

As an educator at the University of Oregon, Professor Jina Kim is experienced in teaching students about Korean literature and culture in the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures. She is also a published author who wrote a comparative study of modernist literature and culture emerging in Seoul and Taipei during the Japanese colonial era titled Urban Modernities in Colonial Korea and Taiwan. Many Canadians may be unaware about the Japanese colonialism era and its implications that still exist in modern day Taiwan and South Korea. Professor Kim’s Hope Talk is the perfect stepping stone for listeners to understand a side of history that is often ignored in Western media.

Lessons From Nitobe Garden

JULIA PARK – RESEARCHER

During Julia’s time as a graduate student at the University of Oxford, she came across a book in the library written by a man named Nitobe Inazo. The discovery of the book and its content ultimately led to the creation of Julia’s paper and eventually, the Nitobe event which took place in March 2020 at UBC’s Nitobe Memorial Garden. Who is Nitobe, and what impact did he have in history? What is the connection between him and Korea and Taiwan? Come join Julia as she shares her findings and thoughts on the event, in addition to the unexpected reaction from the audience at the time.

Having immigrated to Canada at a young age, Julia also discusses her experience of being Korean Canadian and the challenges surrounding her cultural identity. She mentions how feelings of doubt in one’s identity and the presence of generational disconnection is quite prevalent in the Asian Canadian and Korean Canadian communities. Julia’s interests and work in exploring Korean and Asian Canadian identity has allowed her to share her knowledge and opinions in a thought-provoking discussion, as she connects and relates historical events with current topics.

Taiwan, Please Answer

SISI CHANG / KAI-CHUN HUANG / JOSHUA WANG

For more than 20 years, TAIWANfest has evolved from a community base or a diaspora event to a platform where communities come together to create dialogue over our diversity.  Charlie Wu, Managing Director of the organization, has collaborated with Taiwanese publisher Gūsa on a book, “Taiwan, the world’s answer.”  This book documents the changes that took place over the span of Charlie’s career and how he has seen being a Canadian helps his own journey to find his Taiwanese identity.  He encourages newcomers to Canada to adapt a mindset of relevance when sharing their own cultures in Canada.  The same approach actually inspires many Taiwanese, as Taiwan has constantly been isolated on the world stage.  While the book title suggests he has the answers for Taiwan, it is more of his mindset when talking to Canadians about the relevance of Taiwan.

The two writers, Sisi Chang and Kai-Chun Huang, and the editor, Joshua Wang, have never attended the festival.  However, through writing this book and researching about Canada, they find themselves taking new perspectives examining their own understanding of being Taiwanese.  All three of them are in the prime of their writing or publishing career but they also represent a generation of Taiwanese perhaps different from what you might have thought before.  They will join TAIWANfest as they share their answers about being Taiwanese!
