Taiwan New DNA

2019 TAIWANfest - Taiwan New DNA

Taiwan New DNA

The issues that Indigenous people face are not the issues of others. Instead, they are Taiwan’s issues, which are also our issues!

Before the Qing emigration to Taiwan in the 17th century, the Indigenous people had been living in Taiwan for over 8000 years. After changing eras, people from different backgrounds immigrated to and settled in Taiwan. However, colonial history had caused indigenous people to abandon their culture, drifting themselves away from their roots. Many Taiwanese Indigenous people grow up in the city, distancing themselves from their traditional language, music, cultural customs, and their way of life.

Many Taiwanese people care about the issues Indigenous people face. It is a controversy. Such freedom in speech may evoke the non-Indigenous youths to care about the Indigenous people losing their homes and losing their mother culture. This new generation uses social media to connect and express their artistic creations, and actively participate in the Indigenous social movement. This kind of sympathy and concern allows the Indigenous issues to transcend languages, ethnicities, and generations into Taiwanese people’s lives and thoughts, evolving into modern Taiwanese society and culture.

The Department of Fashion Design at Taiwan Shih Chien University cooperated with Shung Ye Museum of Formosan Aborigines to express multicultural respect and fusion, and to preserve Indigenous skills and arts. The students studied traditional Indigenous history, totems, and the weaving process. They were taught by Atayal weaving teachers, Taka and Yabung Pasang. Starting from fashion design, they led students to raise awareness of Indigenous life and culture preservation. The exhibition displays the Indigenous students and other students’ learning, observation, and reflection of Indigenous culture. By using modern trends, Indigenous culture’s perception is changed, creating a new Taiwanese cultural DNA!

My Journey in Taiwan as a Newcomer from Vietnam

2019 TAIWANfest My Journey in Taiwan

My Journey in Taiwan as a Newcomer from Vietnam

Caroline Nguyễn

As an overseas student studying Mandarin in Taiwan, how did she become a YouTuber who brought Taiwanese and Vietnamese cultures closer? How did she then become the co-emcee for the ceremony of the National Day in Taiwan, as the first newcomer to ever take on the position?

Showing confidence and courage in her soft-spoken voice and knowing her own mind are one’s first impressions when meeting Caroline Nguyễn. Compared to the Vietnamese immigrants who came to Taiwan in the earlier days, she fell in love with the cultural customs and friendliness of the people in Taiwan in another space and time. She also witnessed the existing societal stereotypes against new immigrants and decided to confront them. “The initial thought was to break the false impression that the Taiwanese held against Vietnamese-Taiwanese marriages with my own story”, she says. Caroline and her husband created a YouTube channel called “Hang TV – 越南夯台灣”, not only with the purpose of introducing Vietnamese culture to the local Taiwanese people, but also to present the customs and lifestyles in Taiwan back to Vietnam.

Understanding Caroline at a deeper level helps us to see her determination behind her pretty appearance. Due to her efforts to bridge the cultural gaps between Taiwan and Vietnam using the new media, Caroline Nguyễn was invited to serve as the ceremony co-emcee for the National Day of Taiwan, presenting a brand new impression of new immigrants to Taiwan. This summer, she will be sharing her experience throughout her journey here in this multicultural country, Canada, to bring cultures together and rock with Taiwan and Vietnam!

Music and My Journey of Identities

2019 TAIWANfest - Music & My Journey of Identities

Music and My Journey of Identities

Suana Emuy Cilangasay

Taiwanese Indigenous musician Suana Emuy Cilangasay discovered he wasn’t Minnanese when he was 14 years old., but his parents were in fact Amis and Sakizaya people. What kind of experience did Suana’s family go through? They chose to hide their identity and started a long journey of non-stop migration around Taiwan. These kinds of life encounters and changes led Sauna’s path back to Taitung County to study the Amis language with his grandmother, mother and godmother, pulling him to start on a musical creation journey with the language.

Suana learned how to play instruments as a way to document his feelings and thoughts. He then found a group of like-minded music lovers and formed the Creating Music Orchestra. Even though the members are from different ethnic groups, it is their common goal to perform in the Amis language! The music route Suana took led him into his family memories and tribal history, and he began his long-lasting dialogue with his identity, family, people, and society. He originally grew up in the city, but through his music, he found his lost language, roots and culture, clarifying  his identity and realizing his uniqueness. Music not only builds the connection between him and the Amis people, but also opens up a dialogue in Taiwanese society.

This year, TAIWANfest invites Suana to interact with Canadian musicians from various ethnic backgrounds and specializing in different types of music. Music has accompanied them in facing every moment of life, through the journey of self, and cultural identity. What will we face next? Will it bring surprise or sadness, deep thinking, or realization?

Ju Percussion

Rhythm is like a heartbeat. Knocking and striking are within our natural instincts. With a passion for percussion and the performing arts, the Ju Percussion Group – which sees Taiwan as their roots and sees the world as their stage – has visited 33 countries and regions all around the world and have performed more than 3,000 sessions.

Ju Percussion Group, the first Taiwanese professional percussion group, was founded in a Taipei hot pot restaurant in 1986. At that time, they stopped at a public phone booth on the street and called the receptionist at the office to confirm that this was not a dream. Working hard in the community discreetly, they have changed the Taiwanese people’s understanding of percussion music. It has been 30 years since then, and the group has become an internationally renowned Taiwanese band. The group has showcased their creativity and followed the classics through large annual performances and brand-new productions. Aside from learning Western percussion instruments, the members also learn the drums from Peking Opera, Chinese gong-drum music, Nanguan/Beiguan music, and other Eastern percussive elements. The ensemble has become an important supporter of Taiwanese contemporary percussion development, where more than 130,000 students are learning through the educational system. Upholding the spirit to “Bring Taiwan to the world, and let the world come in”, Ju Percussion Group established the Taipei International Percussion Convention (TIPC), making Taiwan one of the world’s major development centers for percussion.

Tzong-Ching Ju, the Artistic Director of Ju Percussion Group, received a special award from the Percussive Arts Society (PAS) in 2009 for his devotion to percussion arts in the past years.  In 2016, he was recognized in the Hall of Fame in PAS, becoming the first person in the Asian community to receive this honour. This summer, the Ju Percussion Group will bring its astonishing performances to North America, sharing the lively emotions of rhythm to everyone!

Celebrate Women Concert

2019 TAIWANfest - Celebrate Women Concert

Celebrate Women Concert

Concert by Maestro Ken Hsieh
Simon Fraser University Concert Orchestra

The Vietnamese of the previous generation boarded boats and, riding through the waves, arrived into an unknown land called Canada to create a new home by hand. Modern Vietnamese cross the ocean and arrive at the island of Taiwan to work, study, and build families, and to create new chapters in their lives. The sea carries people towards the unknown and connects the people of two places. Whether it is in the past, present or future, women’s migration to different cultures plays an important role in families and society.

Women, beautiful and well-rounded, exemplify resilient qualities. Like the ocean, they are tender like the water, but tough like the waves. Like the ocean, women carry life with care and courage. They are willing to fight for their loved ones with courage, despite the pain. Their inner power and determination are remarkable. This year at TAIWANfest, Taiwanese composer Xin Yu Li will bring us the voice of the island and tell the beautiful story of Taiwan through music!

Whether they are the ones who raise us like our mothers and grandmothers, or those who accompany us like our sisters and friends, or those who we love romantically like our lovers or wives, their love and care give us companionship and confidence. These are all sources of the artist’s inspiration. Through life stories of successful females in all fields, we gain the courage and hope to have an impact on the world. This year at TAIWANfest, the Celebrate Women Concert is for all the females in our lives; they are our eternal sisters
