Mario Subeldia

Mario’s Path to Discover Arts in Taiwan

At age 25, Mario Subeldia left his hometown of Luzon in the Philippines, travelling to work in the Hsinchu Science Park in Taiwan. To overcome his homesickness, he once had the idea of using sand to draw his family’s faces on the beach, unexpectedly sparking his interest in “sand painting” as he discovered his talent.

After spending three years in self study, Mario succeeded in obtaining a Street Artist Permit from Hsinchu and Taipei – the first Philippine migrant worker to do so. His evenings and weekends became marked by heartwarming encounters with people throughout Taiwan; sharing, learning and improving his arts across many media, as well as sharing his story with Taiwan. Now, instead of being known as a migrant worker, he is referred to as “the Artist Teacher” by the City’s Cultural Bureau in Taiwan.

With continued and growing support from the Taiwanese public and media, Mario has developed a platform for other Philippine migrant workers with hidden artistic talents to join him, using their arts to raise funds to support those in need back home in the Philippines. With works of painting, photography, and fashion along with Mario’s own sand painting, hand-made costumes and fashion design, as well as filming, the artistic journeys of Mario and these self-made Philippine artists are only just beginning!

The Pleasures of Paint

A collection of vibrant paintings after painting adorn the scene before a department store in Hsinchu, and gorgeous models dressed in unique and handmade clothing strut up and down the runway. Sunday is not a day of rest for these Filipino artists, but a day to shine!

Taiwan’s first migrant artist, Mario Subeldia, has produced works of all sorts – from sand painting and drawing to handmade clothing and fashion design. After captivating the interest of the mainstream in Taiwan, Mario invited other Philippine migrant workers to showcase their artistic talents in the public eye. Holding several casting, fashion, and art exhibitions in Taiwan, Mario has developed an opportunity for fellow Filipinos to fulfill their dreams.

As the creative mind behind “AFACE: A Fashion And Charity Event”, Mario Subeldia gives the public a new perspective on arts and fashion. During this year’s TAIWANfest, Mario’s original and handmade creations will be exhibited along with arts from his fellow migrant artists in Taiwan.

AFACE – Arts and Fashion A Charity Event

How many could have the imagination or talent to even consider using the National Taiwan Museum as a runway, or the Yingxi Gate of Hsinchu City as a high fashion backdrop? Some twenty-odd Filipino models strut through the scene, showcasing vibrant and exciting pieces of a new fashion – these are Taiwan’s migrant friends; glamorous models that contribute to Taiwan’s fashion industry.

Joining beauty pageants or becoming fashion models are the dreams of many Filipinos. Even if they have come to work or study in Taiwan, they still dream of standing proudly on stage. Mario Subeldia is a talented artist and leader of the Filipino community in Taiwan. Using cigarette boxes, french fry containers, lottery tickets, and other perfectly usable waste and packaging, he designs gorgeous and truly one of a kind works of fashion. Gathering his fellow Filipinos, Mario’s group holds public events and exhibitions including charity fashion shows and even art exhibitions, promoting environmental protection while showcasing the art and talent of the Filipino in Taiwan.

Find your own inspiration in these new and selected pieces exhibited at this year’s TAIWANfest!

Ancestors' Stories You Were Never Told

Dr. Tse-Yi Wang

Do you ever wonder who you are? Where you come from? Or why you exist here and now? If you have ever wondered about you and your family’s origins, you may be interested in discovering more about our common origins and the path of migration. To explain similarities in food, tradition, and language across different cultures and heritages found in the diverse lands of both Taiwan and Canada, we must trace the road through the past to Africa.

Dr. Tse-Yi Wang, known for his role as a member of the team that established the blood donation and transfusion system in Taiwan, has striven for years to trace the paths that humans have walked. WIth his team from the Mackay Memorial Hospital’s Molecular Anthropology and Transfusion Medicine Lab in Taiwan, Dr. Wang traces paternal and maternal bloodlines through complex networks, deciphering the secrets hidden in our blood and our Austronesian connections.

Dr. Wang’s goal is to create a genetic database of the Taiwanese people examining the stories locked away in our blood about our past – through our DNA, uncovering the stories that our ancestors weren’t able to pass on.

Going Home

2018 TAIWANfest Hope Talk - Going Home

Going Home

Bei Ling

When was the last time you went home? Or do you consider yourself already at home? Going home seems to be a choice for many of us, but for some it is impossible. In a modern world with such advanced technologies, why is it impossible?

Bei-Ling, a Chinese author, was arrested in 2000 after publishing a controversial magazine, and later exiled. Since then he has traveled to several countries, and for 18 years he has not had a chance to return to his home – Beijing.

Beijing has changed greatly since the year 2000. What impression does he draw when he thinks about Beijing today? What is it like knowing he might never be able to go home again? Will he ever get to go home?

This program is supported by Greater Vancouver Taiwanese-Canadian Association and UBC Centre for Chinese Research.

Old God Speaks Again

2018 TAIWANfest Hope Talk - Old God Speaks Again

Old God Speaks Again

Ming-Chieh Hsieh

One should never judge a book by its cover. Beneath the rough appearance of toned muscle, a tattooed body, and shaved head lives a mentor of life, wisdom, and spiritual strength. This man is Ming-Chieh Hsieh, who once lived a rebel’s life.

Now a spiritualist, Hsieh had once struggled with severe depression and thoughts of suicide. In what could have been his final moments, he began to hear a voice from deep within himself, and couldn’t help but to ask the voice about matters of life, wealth, and relationships. Committing the miraculous experience to paper, Hsieh wrote over 120,000 words in just a few days. Followed by endless study and self-scrutiny, Hsieh transformed his life as he worked tirelessly to comprehend his experience.

Following his escape from death, Ming-Chieh Hsieh has a new lease and new respect for life; accepting the spirituality of his existence, Hsieh continued to gain and search for more experiences through his adventures in life. Hsieh has also made it his mission to share his transformative journey, hoping to inspire more people to continue to move forward in life.

Island’s Young Cellist

Island's Young Cellist

Jamie Chan

13 year old Jamie Chan is a self-proclaimed Cello and Classical music fanatic, playing in the Taipei Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. Whether at school or in the orchestra, he has a distinct air of maturity and elegance that is very different from the typical schoolchild.

Playing in the school orchestra from an early age, Jamie has often performed in temple celebrations. The frenzy of celebrations combined with the sophistication of classical music paint a very unique scene in Taiwan and showcases a distinct Taiwanese sound.

For Jamie Chan, his cello is his partner. His way to express himself. His way to speak without talking.

“Every time I play the first note, I feel like a hero in the moment.” – Jamie Chan

Migrants’ Park

2018 TAIWANfest - Migrants' Park

Migrants’ Park

Asuka Lee

You and I, in the present, past, or future, are both in the Migrants’ Park.

Each day, we pass by endless waves of new people as we each travel through life. For some, the chance to meet is fleeting, as they are only in our country for a short while – yet have you ever paid attention to listen to their voices? The voices of migrant workers?

Migrants’ Park, a Taiwanese online media platform, specializes in reporting news about new residents and migrant workers in Taiwan. In 2016, it was founded by independent mediaperson Asuka Lee. Despite his poor English and negligible Tagolog, Asuka Lee’s first job in journalism was as a reporter in the Philippines for the Taiwanese multi-lingual media “4-Way News” to pave a bridge between the two island nations.

In 1990, Taiwan relaxed its policies regarding foreign workers and their spouses. Within a generation, the handful of annual foreign visitors have become whole classes of new residents celebrating university graduations throughout Taiwan. The 28 years of integration have been marked by laughter, conflict, tears, and emotion – and many people’s voices were stifled. Foreign residents and migrant workers may be family, friends, colleagues, or even silent pillars supporting the industries – they are key in the function of our society and closely connected to our lives. Journalists like Asuka Lee and his colleagues at Migrants’ Park put these peoples’ stories to words, and continue to bridge us all through a common comprehension.

Pinoy Love in Taipei

Gen Huang

Gen Huang’s tale is of a true love that transcends cross-cultural borders. In 2007, she started Philtai: The Voice, a platform for Filipinos in Taiwan to connect with others that are also living there.

Together with the Filipino-Taiwanese community, they raise money to assist the people of Lubo, a small town in a mountainous region, accessible only by foot or steed. There, they started a program to feed malnourished children, provide school supplies and even toys to inspire and encourage children of the town.

Discover Gen Huang’s experiences and see through her eyes as a Filipino in Taiwan!
